The COVID-19 pandemic turned the entire world upside-down. Since early 2020, it’s felt as if traveling abroad is a dangerous practice or an unattainable dream. But things are beginning to open up again, especially with worldwide vaccine rollouts progressing rapidly.
Traveling for business may soon return, and some of us are going to have to take the first steps back out into the post-pandemic world. Here are some steps to take to ensure that you’re prepared.
Check the Travel Requirements
Health standards vary widely from place to place, and it’s important to be prepared for whatever state your destination is in. Review your requirements and authorizations, and plan to carry facial coverings, hand sanitizer wipes, and your immunization record. Also ensure that you double check your destination country’s restrictions and via requirements.
Assume That Precautions Are Still in Place
No matter what’s happening where you’re from, every country is in a different stage of coming out of the pandemic. Healthcare access varies from country to country, and vaccination programs may not have been fully implemented in your destination yet. Be sure to follow the guidelines and do your best to keep yourself and others safe.
Pay Attention to Changing Etiquette
The pandemic completely overhauled parts of our social norms, and these changes are not going to disappear overnight. While handshakes may have been a normal part of business trips before 2020, they might be unwelcomed in a post-pandemic world. Be mindful and respectful of other people’s comfort and safety while traveling.
Be understanding that some people may still be anxious about COVID-19, and don’t expect others to return to “normal” at the same pace that you are. Be especially mindful to ensure that you’re not making things more difficult for people who are just trying to do their jobs. TSA agents, cab drivers, and other service industry personnel often don’t have control over what precautions they are taking while working, and it’s best not to take it as a personal offense.
