Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, traveling for work dropped exponentially beginning in 2020. For some, business travel was down by 90% at one point. But with more and more individuals returning to the office, traveling for work is coming back as well.
That said, it isn’t as easy as jumping back into the saddle. With so much time away, it can be a bit disorienting to get back into the thick of it. Here are a few tips for jumping back into the work travel life.
Reevaluate the Old Ways
The biggest thing that both individuals and organizations can do is to look at the old travel schedule and determine whether it is necessary. Just because things can go back doesn’t mean that they should go back to exactly how they were.
If anything, it is a chance to take a look at those old ways and find potential improvements. That might mean saving money, reducing stress of those who have to travel, or finding a more efficient way of doing things.
Pacing Yourself
Another thing that work travelers can do is to ease back into traveling. Jumping back in with both feet is a quick way to become overwhelmed and burnt out. Having to figure out how to reduce jet lag, pack efficiently, and getting reaccustomed to sleeping in hotels takes time.
Even if the plan is to get back to traveling normally again, it will take a little bit of adjusting. Start slower and work your way up to that travel routine again. It will allow for better acclimation than simply starting full gear again.
Double Check Everything
Just because your office is ready to get back on the road does not mean the road is ready for you. Checking restrictions and seeing what is open is crucial to traveling for work. Ensure that there won’t be situations where employees traveling come to restaurants and hotels that aren’t operating. It will reduce the pain of getting back into the full swing of travel.
