Unfortunately, it’s getting more and more dangerous to travel, especially while alone. You never know what kind of dangers are lurking around the corner. People tend to be most vulnerable in hotels, where they are flustered from their trip and ready to check in. Despite the exhaustion you may be experiencing, however, now is not the time to let your guard down.

  1. Stay Away From the Ground Floor

When checking in, try and ask to be placed in a room anywhere between the third and sixth floors. This is because rooms on the ground floor are easy to break into. Rooms in the middle of the hotel building tend to be higher up, but still close enough for you to access a fire escape ladder in case of an emergency.

  1. Watch Your Luggage

You may not think twice about stepping away from your luggage for a quick second to use the bathroom or to ask someone a question. However, you never know when thieves are out on the prowl and looking for an opportunity to swipe someone’s belongings. Make sure that you never leave your bags unattended for any period of time.

  1. Check Your Locks

After checking into your room, make sure that you check that your locks work and that you are using the deadbolt if there is one. Always keep your door locked, especially when you’re in the bathroom.

  1. Have a Flashlight by Your Bed

You never know when a power outage might happen or an alarm go off. Having a flashlight nearby is beneficial because it will help guide you in the dark if you need to get around.

  1. Lock Valuables in a Safe

These days, many hotels provide their guests with a safe or lock box that is available in their rooms. If you are going somewhere and leaving your valuables behind, be sure to place them in the safe first.

  1. Report a Lost Key

If you happen to lose your room key, report it immediately and ask to be placed in a different room.
